To Market, To Market

So where do designer’s get their inspiration… sometimes it’s just in the marketplace. On a constant search for new inspiration from the denizen of artists and designers past and present, LA’s every changing landscape has so much to offer. Here’s a few new and old friends in town that have moved over, moved in and moved me on my way to being constantly inspired.

Kristen Buckingham‘s wonderful boutique has a collection of “to the trade” pieces and disparate, antique gems from lighting to art.

True favorite find this week is Gray Gallery.

This is an amazing gallery, albeit for a sophisticated eye, that is the collabration of 2 designer brothers that have put together an amazing group of artists with products that you will find internationally or can bring to your own home. Featured artist Peter Lane is worth exploring. A feast for the eyes. Play his slideshow for more on this talented and inspired artist.

At the opposite extreme and on the opposite side of the street… welcome back to WeHo, Richard Mulligan. The longtime seller of great painted american furniture. They do great classic pieces, both reproductions made for todays lifestyle as well as antique gems sprinkled throughout. I especiallly love the painted wicker that is fully upholstered in this last go around… Beautiful gray and gray blues represented at the showroom.

Many of the showrooms are “to the trade” only. Don’t be a hater, just peak in the showroom and call your favorite designer….

One Man’s Floor… How to Change a Room With One Item?

The recent influx of geometric rugs offers a great opportunity to completely update a room. Whether the room is already contemporary or it’s traditional in need of a contemporary update.

Here are some great inexpensive finds that are showing up in all the magazines and design houses coast to coast. Like this great piece from the Hampton’s Designer Showhouse.  Interior Design by Dan Barsanti, Rug: New River Artisans.

Here are some others you can find that are surprisingly, well priced.
This one is from Jonathan Adler. If you like Zig Zag try West Elm’s Rug where they range from from $50 – $700 depending on size. Also look at West Elm’s, Kite Kilim Rug.

Sometimes a small 3×5 is very economical way to add splash to your Bedside or Home Office.

Calypso Home has a terrific display of Dhurrie Style and are from our LA local Brentwood location or online source Calypso Home. They have small bedside rugs, hallway runners and large sizes too from $100 to $800. These would clearly put a new spin on an old space. They have, grays, Creams, Chocolates.

Here’s a softer take with attention grabbing appeal available in Grays, Chocolate and eye catching Blue Ikat… all from Calypso Home.

Outdoor Style

So if you live in LA and you’re hunkering down this weekend while your LA global universe becomes your own home, or your brave enough to invite your very local besties over for a Carmageddon Weekend, read on.

Here are some quick and stylish updates for your backyard environs… It’s not too late to add a dash of color from some of our local, off-the-shelf boutiques and shops around town. Just make it home by 7pm. Simply add music, friends and beverages. Here’s some inspiration and below is a list of sources you can make it to this week… before the weekend begins. Remember 405 shutdown begins 7pm Friday!

Don’t have enough outdoor furniture, don’t be afraid to bring the indoors out. Take a great pair of chairs from the house like these beautiful inlaid Indian chairs out for a peak at the sun for the afternoon. Love the bright colored lanterns and cushions. The outdoor rug grounds the whole space and there’s plenty to choose from.

Perhaps Mod Lounge is more your speed… Lamp, rug and table with bright splashes of color bring the indoors out.

A lovely day bed comes out for a lounge with friends, mix of pillow and colors… If you have a day bed and a bunch of friends coming over, drag it out and see what type of lounging begins… Leave it out for the weekend

1. Head over to American Maison Midi (right next door to American Rag) on La Brea for the best most colorful additions… From Cushions to glassware to the best table cloths, lanterns with just the right dash of spry inspiration every hostess needs. Worst case, they still have great olive oil and gourmet treats like fig balsamic vinegrette.

2. Don’t miss Crate and Barrel BH Sale for anything from extra outdoor cushions, furniture and serving pieces. Well priced basics and a splash of color. Great placemats.

3. Z Gallerie BH is a great colorful source, perfect for outdoor parties.

4. Anthropologie at the Grove has wonderful & fun housewares, great extras for parties…

Good luck and I can’t wait to see all the FB chatter throughout and following the big weekend, Angelenos.

The Red, White & Blue Of It

Is there a more fitting theme to 4th of July… I’ve been wondering when the American Flags would wave, with the British Invasion having been popular and trendy in Interior Design for some time.

That Great British flag on pillows upholstery and rugs. It’s so Rock & Roll. But for the purists of the new country, the good ole US of A,  here are some ideas to fly that flag high… or low…

Although most of us would not decorate our rooms with the flag in mind, the image does appear now and again. Here’s a painting I installed in a boys room recently to change my client’s 8 year old son’s room from little boy Canoe designs to recent Rock Roll fascination…

On the other hand, here’s a couple of examples of Designer’s Room who have managed to slay the Red, White and Blue Concept in an entire room and I say well done…If not kicky…

Another great example of a Red, White and Blue Room by fellow designer Tobi Fairley Interior Design.

ALAS, a collage of Fun Fourth ideas  to add a splash of these colors any time of year or bust out these fun goodies in time for your weekend soire…

Red Lacquer Bamboo Chair – American Rag Home, White Coral Lamp – Accessory Collection, Navy Linen Sofa & Brass Garden Stool – Plantation, Ikat Lamp & Shade Architexture, Red/White Quatrefoil Pillow – Cococozy Shop, Ceramic Lamp – Best & Lloyd. American Flag Chair at Top Available Cisco Home.
